Bali meeting is crucial to reducing pollution

The United Nation’s top climate change official says the world will be in deep trouble if a Bali meeting next month on reducing global emissions fails.

Yvo de Boer, stressed that the international community is fighting against time in a bid to stem global warming.

He says a new treaty to reduce emissions would need to be completed by 2009 or 2010 at the very latest, so that all signatories can ratify it in time.

The meeting in Bali, gathering members of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will develop a path for negotiating pollution cuts to be implemented after 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol pledges run out.

Garuda Indonesia has confirmed an increase in Perth-Bali services in response to overwhelming demand, with three extra return flights a week from 02 December.Garuda will step up to double daily direct flights to and from Bali on every weekday except Wednesday, when there is a single flight.  It also operates four direct Jakarta services a week, introduced earlier this year.

The B737-800 flights will add 468 seats to the airline’s capacity, helping to meet the overwhelming demand being experienced as the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons approach, said Garuda Indonesia’s new general manager, Australia/ South-West Pacific, Poerwoko Soeparyono.  “Western Australia is leading demand across Australia for flights to Bali. While Australia-wide demand is up more than 60 per cent on the same period last year, growth in WA is outstanding” said Poerwoko.

bali street name and address

The Indonesian spelling of geographical features and villages varies considerably as there is no form of standardization that meets with both popular and official approval. village names spelled three different ways, all on signboards in front of various government offices. There are three overlapping and concurrent address systems for any given location: old street name and number, new street name with new numbers, and kampung (neighborhood) name with block numbers. Every town has its street named after the same national heroes, so you will find General Sudirman Street in every city throughout the archipelago.

Traveling with children

Luckily for those with children, the Balinese are very gentle and love to have kids around. But you should bring essentials: sun hats, creams, medicines, special foods, nappies, and a separate water container for babies to be sure of always having sterile water. Disposable diapers are available in big supermarkets. Nights can be cool sometimes, so bring some warm clothing for your child. Milk, eggs, fruit which you can peel and porridges are readily available in the supermarkets here. Babysitters are available for a moderate charge at any hotel. Staying in Kuta and Legian Area

The white sands of Kuta are still arguably the best beach front on Bali. The beach is much cleaner than just a few years ago, although the vendors remain annoying. Kuta is not the fishing village it once was: it is now a booming Pacific resort and its streets are clogged with tourists and traffic during peak seasons. Legian is a bit quieter, less crowded, and more suitable for longer stays, although in many ways it has become an extension of Kuta. Further north, Seminyak, Petitenget and Canggu offer more tranquility. Continue reading ‘Staying in Kuta and Legian Area’
