Some people ask is Bali is a free malaria?, or do i need to have inject for malaria?, here is the answer. bali is not yet “declared free of malaria”, but It is not really necessary to take malaria prevention tablets in Bali, What so far better is to have a prevention program in place where you try to make sure you do not get bitten at all. There are diseases from mosquitoes that can be caught in Bali namely dengue fever which can be quite dangerous depending on the type you have to catch.
First of all it depends on when you are planning on coming, and where you are staying. In some months there are higher concentrations of mosquito, and some areas have more than others.
however it is almost impossible not to be bitten even taking the most cautious of precautions. Malaria is present in certain areas of Bali now, mostly concentrated in the centre and parts of the East of Bali. the cases for Malaria and Dengue fever are no more than in previous years. There is no preventative medicine available for Dengue fever anyway.
Don’t waste money or space bringing any spray or insect repellent from your country, there are plenty of products easily available over here. the mosquito which carries the Dengue fever is the daytime one, around mostly between 7:00 am and 11:00 am. If you are staying in the South in a hotel or villa resort, your chances of being bitten by this pesky insect are less than in the rural areas, most hotels and villas have programs to periodically spray around, mostly the touristy areas are aware of and eliminate as best they can all those standing water places. Not saying you wont get bitten but the dengue fever and malaria carrier isn’t around so much in the touristy areas.
If you are staying in the center and backpacking it or on budget accommodation, then i suggests its best to buy a mosquito coil, and a spray. (most hotels have some sort of prevention available in the rooms anyway, but some more budget hotels you need extra) . Spray around in your room 1 hour before you go to sleep (if thats possible) concentrate the spray on any curtains/furnishings as this is where the blighter’s hide. Then light a coil just before retiring, this will then help eliminate both the night time mosquito, and the early morning one.
So after all that, it’s up to you if you want to take Malaria tablets or just sit by the pool and drink plenty of Gin and Tonic which is also just as good as tablets and more pleasurable.
Have a great time over here. don’t worry too much.
